Pomona Oatmeals

The Pomona range has always had lovely oatmeal bowls, such as the Hoary Morning Apple bowl:

Pomona Bread and Butter Plates

IMG_6019

Pomona was launched in 1982, with pictures from the English Pomological Magazine from the early 1800s.

IMG_6016

They are hand-coloured engravings with very vivid colours.

IMG_5668

The motifs on these six 7 inch plates are: Grimwoods Ruyal George, the Ingestrie Pippin, the Hazel Nut, Wilmots Early Red,  L’Imperatrice Plum and the White Dutch Currant.

The White Dutch Currant was later replaced by the Red Currant, the image looks mirrored, the currants are now red:

IMG_5669

The blue L Imperatrice Plum was replaced by the Reine Claude Plum:

IMG_5670

The Biggeraux Cherry looked unripe and was therefore replaced by the Late Duke Cherry.

The plates here have differently sized motifs:

IMG_5671

The Hazel Nut is an all time favourite:

Later motifs on plates with a leaf border are: the Lane’s Prince Albert Apple, the Roman Apricot, the Kiwi, the Shropshire Damson and the Elsanta Strawberry.

Some of these can also be found on no border plates:

Pomona Trial Dishes

I came across several Pomona dishes that never made it to production. One is a small 11 inch oval plate with the Biggeraux Cherry and the Ingestrie Pippin :

IMG_3502

It has a small greyish oval backstamp.
Regular plates have one motif, such as here the Red Currant:

IMG_3496

A larger 15 inch platter has the Roman Apricot. Here it is the shape, or rather the rim of the dish that is unusual:

IMG_3506

The backstamp clearly states it is a sample:

IMG_3507

Another 15 inch platter has the regular shape, but it features four smaller motifs instead of one large one:

IMG_3511

It has the Wilmots Early Red, the Hoary Morning Apple, the Imperatrice Plum and the White Dutch Currants.

This platter has no backstamp at all, on the rim are the letters NF. Slightly mysterious, this wonderful platter.

Plant Pots

Botanic Garden always has had a great variety of planters and plant pots. Here are three small pots made for Kew Gardens:

IMG_3349

These have the Forget Me Not, the Rhododendron and the Speedwell.

Here are my favourite 4 by 5 inch pots, with the original oatmeal motifs:

IMG_3430

Thet are the Ivy Leafed Cyclamen, the Orchid, the Purple Iris, the Canterbury Bells, the Barbados Cotton Flower and the Orange Cactus.

Portmeirion also had boxed planters or cache pots, here seen with the Common Tomentil:

IMG_3435

The backside of the box advised which plants they were meant for:

IMG_3436

Here is a bell-shaped planter with the Trailing Bindweed:

IMG_3419

Although many planters have the Botanic Garden motifs there are also Pomona planters, here seen with the Ingestrie Pippin, the Imperatrice Plum and the Red Currant:

IMG_3437

and Birds of Britain planters, such as here with the Nuthatch:

IMG_3420

The Spring Gentian can also be found on planters:

Pomona Salad Bowls

Here are the beautiful Pomona salad bowls:

IMG_2593

The motifs on these 5.5 inch bowls are: White Dutch Currant, Imperatrice Plum, Wild Blackberry, Late Duke Cherry, Queen of Sheba, Red Currant, Biggerraux Cherry, Teinton Squash Pear, Wilmots Early Red, Shropshire Damson, Hazel Nut, Ingestrie Pippin, Hoary Morning Apple, Grimwoods Royal Peach.

IMG_5716

Here is the Wilmots Early Red, one of the Gooseberries. There is also the Queen of Sheba:

IMG_5722

They are early motifs, retired soon after the range was launched.

IMG_5724

The Hazel Nut is another early motif:

IMG_5719

The Ingestrie Pippin, one of my favourites:

IMG_5720

Here are the early Biggerraux Cherry and the Late Duke Cherry:

IMG_5726

The White Dutch Currant was replaced by the Red Currant:

IMG_5718

They are wonderful to look at and look great with a fruit salad.

IMG_2594

There are also 5 inch salad bowls:

IMG_2597

I have two different Hazel Nut bowls, one motif is much larger than the other:

IMG_5714

Also one bowl has the leaf border, the other is borderless:

IMG_5712

I am still hunting for more different motifs.

IMG_5711

Pomona dishes

These are the Pomona Grapes, the blue Raisin de Carmes and the white Sweetwater Grape. They are beautiful motifs, especially on the large dishes and the breadcrock. The motif on the lid of the breadcrock is the l’imperatrice Plum. On the left is a 15 inch oval platter, on the box is the 19 inch oval platter with the Raisin de Carmes.  I took the picture in the fruit garden, next to our own grapes.

IMG_2536

On this lasagna dish you can see the Amicua Melon, an early Pomona motif that was retired too soon.

IMG_3515

It really is a marvellous motif:

IMG_3522

The Ingestrie Pippin apples on this platter are beautiful:

IMG_2545

Pomona also had a series of 11 inch oval plates:

IMG_3501

These have the  Red Currant, the Hoary Morning Apple, the Royal George Peach and the Biggareux Cherry

One 11 inch plate is a trial, with a small greyish oval backstamp:

IMG_3502

and this is a special 15 inch platter with no backstamp at all:
